Building a stable block is an exciting project, and at Royal Arenas, we’ve helped horse owners across Meath, Kildare and Dublin create functional, comfortable homes for their horses. Whether you’re planning stables for one horse or several, getting the design right from the start makes all the difference to your daily routine and your horses’ wellbeing.
Size Matters
Each stable needs enough space for your horse to move comfortably, lie down and turn around easily. We typically recommend at least 12′ x 12′ for standard horses, though larger horses may need 14′ x 14′. Think about the height too: adequate headroom prevents injuries and improves ventilation.
Door Design
Stable doors deserve careful consideration. Do you want them opening inward or outward? Will you need anti-weave features to prevent head weaving and protect your horse from injury? These small details make a big difference to safety and management. We can talk you through the options that work best for your situation.
The Practical Extras
Think about what makes daily care easier. Where will you position water bowls? Do you want swivel feed bowls that you can fill from outside? What type of hay rack works best for your feeding routine? These features might seem minor, but they save time every single day.
Storage and Utility Areas
Don’t forget about your tack room. An L-shaped design often works brilliantly, maximising storage whilst keeping everything accessible. Consider adding a washbasin and a covered area for shaving storage: keeping bedding dry is essential, and having it close to your stables saves countless trips back and forth.
Ventilation and Layout
Good airflow keeps horses healthy, but you don’t want draughts. We’ll help you position windows and vents to create a comfortable environment. Think about how your stable block relates to your arena, paddocks and existing facilities too: a good layout makes yard management so much easier.
With over 20 years of experience building equestrian facilities, we understand what works in practice, not just on paper. Every yard is different, and we’ll work with you to create a stable block that suits your horses, your routine and your budget.
