At Royal Arenas, we get asked about covered arenas a lot. Horse owners across Meath, Kildare and Dublin are increasingly looking at them as a long-term solution to Ireland’s unpredictable weather, and it is easy to understand why. But a covered arena is a significant investment, and it deserves careful thought before you commit. Here is what we think you should consider.

The Obvious Advantage: Riding in Any Weather

Let’s start with the reason most people want one. A covered arena means you are never at the mercy of the Irish weather again. No cancelled lessons, no standing at the stable door watching the rain, no frozen ground in January. You ride when you want, for as long as you want, all year round. For anyone who keeps their horse at home in Meath or commutes to a yard in Kildare or Dublin, that kind of consistency is genuinely life-changing.

What Size Do You Need?

Covered arenas typically start at 20m x 40m and can go well beyond 1,200 square metres depending on your needs and budget. The right size depends on what you plan to use it for. A single horse owner schooling at home has very different requirements from a yard running lessons or hosting clinics. We always recommend thinking about how the space will be used day-to-day and building in a little extra room if your budget allows. Going slightly bigger at the outset is almost always money well spent.

Ventilation and Lighting

These two things are non-negotiable in a covered arena. Horses need good airflow, and without proper ventilation a covered structure can become uncomfortable and even unhealthy. Lighting needs to be planned carefully too, both for evening riding and for darker winter days when natural light through the roof is limited. Getting these elements right from the start makes the arena a pleasure to use rather than a compromise.

Planning Permission

A covered arena is a substantial structure and will almost certainly require planning permission. Requirements vary across counties, and the process can feel daunting if you have never been through it before. We have worked on covered arena projects across Leinster and are very familiar with what local authorities in Meath, Kildare and Dublin expect. We can help guide you through that process so there are no surprises.

Is It Worth It?

For most serious horse owners, the answer is yes. The ability to train consistently, protect your horse from the elements and add real value to your property makes a covered arena one of the most rewarding investments you can make in your equestrian setup.
