Stable doors might seem like a straightforward choice, but there are more options than you might think. At Royal Arenas, we’ve installed stable doors across Meath, Kildare and Dublin for over 20 years, and we know that getting this detail right makes a real difference to both safety and convenience.

Opening Direction Matters

One of the first decisions you’ll face is whether your doors should open inward or outward. Outward-opening doors are the most common choice: they’re safer in an emergency, as you can always open them even if a horse is down inside. They also save space within the stable. However, inward-opening doors can work well in certain layouts, particularly where external space is limited.

Anti-Weave Protection

If your horse tends to weave (swaying their head repetitively over the door), anti-weave grilles are worth considering. Weaving can lead to injuries if a horse strikes their head on the door frame or top edge. Anti-weave bars create a barrier that discourages this behaviour whilst still allowing your horse to look out and get fresh air. Not every horse needs this feature, but if yours shows signs of weaving, it’s a sensible safety measure.

Door Height and Design

Standard stable doors are split in two sections: the top half can remain open for ventilation whilst the bottom half keeps your horse safely contained. The height needs to be appropriate for your horse’s size. Too low and they might try to jump out; too high and they lose the benefit of looking around, which can increase stress and boredom.

Hardware and Finish

Quality fixtures matter more than you might think. Bolts and latches need to be horse-proof (some horses are remarkably clever at opening simple catches) and durable enough to withstand daily use in all weathers. We use robust, reliable hardware that stands up to Irish weather conditions and regular use.

Making Your Choice

The right stable door depends on your horse’s behaviour, your yard layout and your daily routine. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, which is why we take time to understand your specific situation before making recommendations.

At Royal Arenas, we’ve seen what works and what doesn’t. Give us a call to discuss your stable door options. We’ll help you choose doors that keep your horses safe and make your life easier.
