When it comes to building a safe horse arena, proper fencing is absolutely crucial. At Royal Arenas, we’ve installed countless arena fencing systems across Meath, Kildare, and Dublin, and we’ve learned that getting the safety aspects right from the start makes all the difference for both horses and riders.

The most important safety feature of any arena fence is the kickboard. These solid boards at ground level prevent horses’ legs from slipping under the fence and protect against serious injuries. We typically recommend kickboards at least 30cm high, constructed from smooth, durable materials with no protruding nails or sharp edges. The kickboard should sit close to your arena surface to eliminate any gaps where a hoof could become trapped.

Height matters too. Your arena fencing should be tall enough to discourage horses from attempting to jump out, usually around 1.2 to 1.4 metres depending on your horses and discipline. The fencing needs to be clearly visible to horses, helping them understand the arena boundaries and avoid accidental collisions.

Material choice plays a significant role in safety. Treated wood remains popular for its natural appearance and durability, whilst PVC offers excellent weather resistance and requires minimal maintenance. Whatever material you choose, smooth surfaces are essential. Any rough edges, splinters, or protruding fixings can cause injuries, so proper installation and regular maintenance are vital.

Gates deserve special attention. They should open away from the arena, have secure latching mechanisms that horses can’t accidentally open, and be wide enough for safe access. We’ve seen too many poorly positioned gates create unnecessary hazards in otherwise well-designed arenas.

Regular inspections are your best defence against safety issues. Check for loose boards, damaged posts, or any deterioration in the fencing structure. In our Irish weather, wood can rot and fixings can work loose over time, so catching problems early prevents accidents.

At Royal Arenas, safety isn’t just a box to tick during construction. With over 20 years of experience, we understand how proper fencing protects your horses and gives you peace of mind. We take care to install fencing that’s not only safe and durable but also complements your arena’s design.
