At Royal Arenas, we have spent over 20 years building equestrian facilities across Meath, Kildare and Dublin, and one thing we have noticed is that not every arena needs to be a full-size competition space. Plenty of our clients come to us wanting something more modest, whether that is for a child who has just got their first pony, a small private yard with one or two horses, or simply a property where space is limited. Smaller arenas are a brilliant option, and they are more achievable than most people think.

Who Are Smaller Arenas For?

The most common reason people come to us asking about a smaller arena is a child or young teenager who has caught the riding bug. A standard 20m x 40m arena can feel overwhelming for a small pony and a nervous young rider. A more compact space, perhaps 20m x 20m or 20m x 30m, gives younger riders a contained and confidence-building environment where they can learn and develop without feeling lost. It also makes it much easier for a parent or instructor to supervise from the fence.

That said, smaller arenas are not just for children. They work beautifully for private horse owners who simply want a safe, consistent surface for light schooling and hacking out preparation, without the footprint or cost of a larger build.

What Size Should You Go For?

This really depends on how the arena will be used. For young riders and ponies, a 20m x 20m space is a practical starting point. If you want a little more room to introduce basic flatwork or small poles, 20m x 30m gives you that flexibility without a huge increase in cost. We always have a conversation with our clients about their specific situation before recommending a size, because no two projects are the same.

Does Smaller Mean Cheaper?

To a degree, yes. A smaller arena requires less material, less groundwork and less surface coverage, which does bring the overall cost down compared to a full-size build. However, the core elements, good drainage, a solid base, quality surface material and proper fencing, are just as important regardless of size. Cutting corners on these to save money tends to cause problems further down the line, and we always advise against it.

The Same Standards, Whatever the Size

At Royal Arenas, we approach every project with the same care and attention, whether we are building a large all-weather arena or a compact space for a child and their first pony. The safety of the horse and rider is always our priority, and that does not change based on scale.

If you are thinking about a smaller arena for your property in Meath, Kildare, Dublin or anywhere across Leinster, we would love to have a chat. Give us a call and we can talk through what would work best for your space, your horses and your budget.
