At Royal Arenas, we’ve seen all sorts of maintenance challenges across our years of building and supporting arenas in Meath, Kildare, and Dublin. Today, I’d like to share some tips to deal with three of the most common issues we encounter with arenas.

Let’s start with uneven surfaces – something every arena owner faces at some point. You’ll notice it first in your arena’s high-traffic areas, particularly on the track and in corners where riders naturally spend more time. The surface material tends to migrate towards the edges, leaving thinner patches in the middle. The key is regular harrowing – aim for at least weekly if you’re using your arena regularly. Try to vary your riding patterns too; it’s amazing how much difference this simple change can make. Once a month, take time to rake the surface material back from the edges – it’s a bit of work, but it’ll keep your arena riding true and even.

Drainage is another crucial area that needs attention, especially with our Irish weather. If you’re noticing standing water after rain or spots that stay soft longer than they should, it’s time for some drainage maintenance. Keep an eye on your drainage channels and make sure they’re clear of debris. After heavy rain, walk your arena and look for any areas where water isn’t draining as it should. Regular surface grooming helps prevent compaction that can interfere with drainage, and maintaining the right surface depth protects your drainage layer.

The third common issue we see is surface contamination. It might seem obvious, but removing droppings promptly makes a huge difference to your surface quality. Organic matter can break down and mix with your surface material, changing its properties and potentially affecting drainage. Keep an eye out for any weeds appearing around the edges – they can work their way through the membrane if left unchecked. Regular checking of your membrane’s integrity and topping up surface material when needed will help maintain consistent performance.

Remember, prevention is always better than cure when it comes to arena maintenance. A little regular attention goes a long way in extending your arena’s life and maintaining optimal riding conditions. These simple steps, performed regularly, will help keep your arena performing at its best throughout the year.
