Every arena owner faces surface challenges at some point. At Royal Arenas, we’ve helped countless clients across Meath, Kildare, and Dublin resolve surface issues that were affecting their riding experience. Here’s our practical guide to identifying and fixing the most common problems.

Uneven Surface

An uneven surface is perhaps the most common complaint we hear. You’ll notice it when your horse consistently trips in certain areas or you feel a distinct difference in depth as you ride across your arena.

The fix: Regular harrowing is essential, but you need the right equipment for your surface type. For compacted areas, a deeper harrow setting helps break up the material. Pay special attention to high-traffic zones like the track and corners. Consider adding fresh material to low spots after thorough harrowing.

Excessive Dust

If you’re finishing your rides looking like you’ve been in a dust storm, your arena surface is likely too dry.

The fix: A proper watering regime is crucial. For outdoor arenas in Ireland, this isn’t usually a year-round problem, but during dry spells, a good watering system makes all the difference. Consider adding a dust-reducing additive if the problem persists. These products bind fine particles without making the surface too firm.

Waterlogging

Puddles that remain long after rainfall indicate drainage issues that need attention.

The fix: First, check that your surface drains are clear of debris. If the problem persists, you might need to investigate the drainage layer beneath your arena. Sometimes the membrane becomes blocked with fine particles, preventing proper water flow. In severe cases, installing additional drainage channels might be necessary.

Surface Separation

When different components of your surface mix (like sand and fibre) start to separate, it creates inconsistent riding conditions.

The fix: This usually requires a combination of proper harrowing techniques and possibly adding a binding agent. Make sure you’re using the right maintenance equipment for your specific surface type – some surfaces need special tools to maintain proper mixing.

Hard or Compacted Areas

A surface that feels hard underfoot means compaction has occurred, increasing the risk of injury to your horse.

The fix: Deep harrowing is essential, but you might also need to check your base. Sometimes what feels like surface compaction is actually a problem with the underlying layers. Adding the right amount of new material can help restore proper cushioning.
